| International Women's Day | SHANKAR COMPETITION The Shankar Competition is a painting event held on the first Saturday or Sunday in November. The history behind the event is that Shankar was an Indian cartoonist who set up a foundation in India to promote children’s art. The Indian government got involved with this foundation in order to make it worldwide, thus the Indian embassy in Havana facilitates this painting competition – which is part of Shankar’s foundation – for us as a school. Participation in this competition was offered to our school in 2000 by the Indian Ambassador who was on the board of the school at the time. In order to participate officially children have to be 15 years of age or younger, and winners are judged on local and international levels because they are so many participants around the world. Prizes are also given within the school for the best paintings within each age group, and although there is an age limit anybody is free to be a part of the event. The event is always held on a weekend and everybody who wants to be a part of it gathers to paint or to help, and all paintings are submitted by the end of the day. We celebrate this event to promote art within our school, and foster appreciation of it.
