| International Women's Day | JOSE MARTI DAY José Martí was an influential Cuban writer, and a national hero of Cuba. Born in 1853 José Martí became famous for opposing the Spanish colonial rule over Cuba through his revolutionary writings as a journalist, and became renowned for his talents as a philosopher, poet and educator. In 1895 he was one of the organizers of a revolution against the Spanish in Cuba, but was captured and killed in May of that year. Cuba celebrates him through this national holiday in order to honour his efforts to liberate the country, and his skills as an extraordinary poet and author. We as a school celebrate this event to out of respect for our host country by supporting him as a national hero of Cuba. Traditionally this event is marked by a school assembly where we learn through different ways about the life and struggles of José Martí, the values and morals that he stood for, and why he is so important within Cuba.
